The Music Curriculum at Kellman Brown Academy
Music is a big part of any Jewish community, and Kellman Brown Academy is no exception. Our classes use music in their everyday Jewish lives, from singing Hatikvah, the Israeli national anthem, to using both old and new melodies during t’filot, their daily prayer services. At every school assembly or gathering, there is music from our culture and history so that the entire school may join together and celebrate our heritage.
In music classes, students learn music history, literacy, and theory in a variety of ways. From the percussion instruments used in our youngest classes, the students advance to learn the recorder, Orff instruments such as the glockenspiel and xylophone, guitar, and even music composition in later years. We have the unique opportunity here at KBA to teach the basics of music through both secular and Jewish cultural and holiday music. Before every major holiday, our younger students learn songs that both reinforce their knowledge of the holiday and help them connect to their culture and heritage, while also picking up musical basics such as rhythm and harmony.
Our third-grade, fourth-grade, and fifth-grade choir has done a number of concerts both in and out of the school, and is performing a variety of music with harmony and multiple parts. We also have the pleasure of offering our older students the opportunity to perform in our school musical every year. The students work with professional staff and always have a great time learning to sing, dance, and act on stage. We are proud to celebrate the music of our history and the modern music of today.
